Gemstones are precious minerals found all over the earth in different landscapes and variety of rocks. These gems includes visible traces of their genesis where they were formed. These visible traces are called inclusions which are found in all variety of gemstones & diamonds as well. 

When these inclusions are studied under high magnification, they can tell us about the geological environment in which these gems were formed. 

And why we need to know the origin of their formation? Because gems mined at Place-A might yield different characteristics which might make them more valuable than minerals mined at Place-B.
